A long time part of our business growth strategy was to seperate Gentle Giants into two business types. One that does printing and embroidery on promotional clothing, workwear and corporate uniforms available as immediate stock options for clubs, schools, business etc. And one that does manufacturing, indent and outsourcing, all production for small quantity clothing orders. That is Garment Makers and mostly we do items you can source easily and may need a pattern made up, artwork created and a full production team on staff to do.. but better we offer the virtual factory. So it is with great pleasure that I take an excerpt from a recent article in the APPA magazine – Focus on Fabrics/Clothing. This particular part of the article explains the different garment decoration techniques and what works on what best, this is the best written information I have seen! Complete Uniform Solutions salesteam will work with you and assist you to replicate your logo. Below I have take some of the article and expanded on comments to help you understand your promotional garment branding options and logo representation better.

“Garments can be branded in a variety of ways:

Embroidery: manage your clients expectation on fine logos with small text” In reality some logos are not going to be readable or work embroided and the client needs to know this upfront before everyone starts spending time trying to make something look good that never will.. the logo may need to be edited by way of text changes or it may need to be applied in a different manner.

Screen Print: to get the best effect dark garments will need a further colour added, that is white underlay on the garment or they may need a double hit for more vivid colour. If you are doing a 2 colour print on a black tshirt be prepared to pay for the 3 colour price and get the underlay and a better lasting better quality print.

Transfer Print:excess washing can cause cracking or puckering” And a word of advice the dryer on hot is just going to kill it!

“Flocking: Reinforce iron care instructions

Sublimation Print: Used only on 100% polyester garments, whereby specialised inks are absorbed by the fabric to give permanent design. Generally fabrics are sublimated prior to garment being sewn together. Ideally suited for sporting garments such as football jerseys where design is over the entire garment”

REMEMBER to follow the care instructions for the garment. To get a longer life out of your logoed polo, custom printed tshirt, or embroided shirt it is best not to dry garments in direct sunlight for prolonged periods. dark colours in particular, should be line dried out of direct sunlight to avoid fading.

With Stretch garments (eg. lycra or elastane) these garments should never be washed in hot water or they will shrink. Similarly, they must not be dried in the clothes dryer.

Outsource the way to go?

Is outsourcing the way to go for the future, sure great you can have no stress of staff timetables and personality conflicts but you have no control you cannot be sure who is doing the job, you cannot stop a mistake because you do not see the goods until the job is done.

If you are going to outsource you need to outsource to professionals that have been in the business for a reasonable amount of time, that can deliver within your timeframe. Professionals that understand the job, that can provide a production approval and do the job to your job sheet specification.. Whoa sounds like you need www.garmentmakers.com or www.completetz.com.au – now these are my preferred garment and decoration suppliers.

But when I want some artwork or web assistance, well I used to struggle to do my own but now I just go to www.freelancer.com and look at the picture that someone has done for me for a job proof.. Of course now I will manufacture these garments at our factory. These will be worn by day spa staff at a known Melbourne Hotel, these are non-iron easy care garments, and the girls will look great.

So if you are going to outsource select carefully and beware of outsourcing to countries like Pakistan and people who just contact you on the web from China, use reliable suppliers and distributors. Hey you might get some orders through and they are great, but then it all goes pear shaped, goods don’t arrive or arrive hugely late and wrong count.. they smell and they don’t fit – then your customer will be unhappy and you will be in a ‘situation’ or they will do a few jobs for you from Pakistan, you always have to pay upfront and then – boom- they take your money and you get no goods delivered!
